Our Curriculum Intent

The Textiles Department achieve the Howard’s curriculum intent by bringing out the best through encouraging the student’s creativity and imagination and promoting skill development through practical tasks, group work and analysis. We will ensure our curriculum is board and balanced by providing a course where students design and make and explore techniques. They will research and solve relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art. Our schemes of work start in KS3 with a Technology focus and in the upper school Year 9 have an Art focus. Both KS4 and KS5 are under the Art Department. We promote and encourage a wider understanding of community and culture through projects based upon different contexts which allow students to appreciate different needs and values. Through the evaluation of past and present design and Art, they develop a critical understanding.

Ambition and challenge in Textiles is developed by encouraging students to be independent learners and take ownership of their creativity. The department has high expectations and challenges students. They are expected, through personal and individual outcomes, to challenge their abilities. Students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
