Mathematics

Our Curriculum Intent

The Maths faculty will achieve the Howard’s curriculum intent by:

  • Developing students’ mathematical and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Challenging and supporting learners at all levels, giving them skills and confidence to tackle a diverse range of problems, from simple puzzles to national competitions.
  • Providing opportunities to experience the satisfaction of finding solutions, and to understand how much of the world is underpinned by mathematics.

National Curriculum Mapping

Our schemes of work are aligned with the National Curriculum and are designed to at least meet its requirements, going beyond them in many respects.

The National Curriculum Purpose of Study for Maths is as follows:

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
