Design and Technology

Our Curriculum Intent

The Design Technology Department will achieve the Howard’s curriculum intent by bringing  out the best through encouraging the student’s creativity and imagination and promoting skill development through practical tasks, group work and analysis of technological world. We will ensure our curriculum is board and balanced by providing a course where pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art. Our schemes of work ranging from KS3 up to KS5 are inclusive and diverse. They are written to allow all students to access. We promote and encourage a wider understanding of community and culture through projects based upon different contexts which allow pupils to appreciate different needs and values. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

Ambition and challenge in Design Technology is developed by encouraging students to be independent learners and take ownership of their creativity. The department has high expectations and challenges pupils with up to date design methodology including an emphasis on sophisticated computer aided design and manufacture. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
